From Active Ulcerative Colitis to Remission

8/30/25

Mr.S came to us with ongoing ulcerative colitis symptoms including urgency, stool instability, rectal sensitivity, sleep disturbance and fluctuating inflammation markers despite prolonged dietary discipline and medication support.

Over the course of 6 months, his inflammatory burden reduced significantly, calprotectin improved substantially, medication requirements began tapering, bleeding reduced, and his gut gradually tolerated a much wider range of foods.

At the same time, his case highlighted one of the most overlooked phases of UC recovery — the “last-mile” stage where inflammation improves before stool consistency, rectal sensitivity and gut–nerve stability fully normalise.

This case reflects the complexity of real-world gut healing: not just suppressing symptoms temporarily, but understanding how inflammation, the nervous system, food tolerance and long-term resilience interact over time.
