M for Mitahar : Mindful Moderation
Appetite vs. Hunger
Is there a difference?
When you feast your eyes on a delicious treat, and can taste it before you can eat it - your appetite is in full force. And while your appetite can be suppressed, you can never ignore your hunger.
Hunger is the need to eat, with signs like a growling stomach, and fatigue when you don't eat on time. While appetite is the desire that has many psychological factors that influence it.
Why do civilizations across the world, value restraint and sacrifice? It is the most powerful way to train our instincts.
“As they say, everything in moderation, including moderation”
There is this fairytale like concept in our scriptures of the Ashvini Kumaras. The twins that reside in heaven and govern good health. They go by the name 'Parishram' and 'Mitahar' or physical exercise and moderate eating.
If you allow these two physicians into your life, they say you will never need a physician on Earth. Perhaps not so straightforward but this shines light on the pillars of great health.
